General Tso’s Chicken is a famous Chinese American dish but was created in Taiwan by Chinese chef Peng Chang-keui. This dish never became part of traditional Chinese cuisine but has become a staple in Chinese American cuisine. When introduced to the states in the 70s, the recipe began to lose its original shape which has formed the many variations we see today. Now we add an Air Fryer version to the mix. Ingredients:
1 lb. Chicken Breast or Boneless Chicken Thighs,
cubed
3 tbsp Cornstarch
Spices: Black Pepper, Kosher Salt, Garlic Powder
2 tbsp Green Onion, sliced
1 tbsp Sesame Seeds (optional)
Sauce:
2 tbsp Rice Vinegar
3 tbsp Hoisin Sauce
1 tbsp Soy Sauce
1 clove Garlic, minced
1 tbsp Fresh Ginger, minced or 2 tsp Ground Ginger
1 tsp Sugar
1 tsp Red Chilli Flakes
1 tsp Cornstarch
1 tsp Sesame Oil
1/4 cup Water
Preheat air fryer to 350 F on air fry mode if that’s an option. Season chicken with spices and lightly toss in corn starch. Place chicken in single layers onto the racks or basket of the air fryer. Cook for 5- 8 minutes, periodically checking to prevent burning, and start to prepare the sauce. In a medium bowl, add all ingredients for sauce and whisk. Continue with air fryer method if your fry can hold a small baking dish or move to the stove top continuation.
Air Fryer Continuation:
Remove chicken from air fryer and add to bowl that contains the sauce. Add half of the green onion and lightly toss ensuring chicken is well coated. Spray or lightly grease a small baking dish that can fit inside of the air fryer. Pour all contents of bowl into pan then place in air fryer for 2-3 minutes. Stir, make sure chicken is coated. Sauce should begin to thicken not burn. Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes. (If your sauce became too sticky add a little water and stir.)
Once cooked, transfer to a serving dish then top with sesame seeds and remainder green onion. Serve over rice, noodles or veggies and Happy Eating!
Stove Top Continuation:
Remove chicken from air fryer and place to side. Heat a saucepan over medium heat and add sauce mixture. Lower heat and occasionally stir sauce until it begins to thicken. Stir in chicken, half of the green onion and cook for an additional two minutes. Remove from heat, transfer to a serving dish then top with sesame seeds and remainder green onions. Serve over rice, noodles or veggies and most importantly, Happy Eating!!
Recommendation: Taste great over Jasmine Rice
